Abstract:

Clinicians in rural Africa have limited access to the Internet. This impedes the practice of evidence-based medicine. However, wireless mobile phone access and use is extensive. The University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with the NLM created a text messaging server for MEDLINE (txt2MEDLINE) searching, together with an SMS-optimized, practice guidelines database in Botswana. This will enable clinicians to access MEDLINE and country-specific clinical guidelines using mobile phones.
