Hb S beta-thalassemia is a variant of sickle cell disease. This condition is caused by mutations in the HBB gene. One copy of the gene has a mutation leading to an abnormal form of hemoglobin known as hemoglobin S, which can distort red blood cells into a sickle (crescent) shape. The other copy of the gene has a mutation that reduces the amount of normal hemoglobin produced. When these two mutations occur together, they can cause anemia, repeated infections, and periodic episodes of pain and organ damage.
