Expertise and Research Interests: 

Dr. Yoo has been a research computer scientist in OHPCC since September 1998.

His research interests include 3D medical image processing and data visualization, multiscale image analysis, computer vision, computer graphics, computational geometry, and parallel and distributed algorithms for image acquisition, processing, and information display. He also works in statistical and structural pattern analysis through the calculus of scale-space. Dr. Yoo is a program project officer for the Visible Human Project Visible Human Project.

Dr. Yoo has a 1985 AB in Biology from Harvard University, a 1990 MS in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a 1996 PhD in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The title of his Ph.D. thesis is "Image Geometry Through Multiscale Statistics".

Professional Activities: 
  • October 1995 to August 1998: Assistant Professor of Radiology and Research Assistant Professor of Engineering, Department of Radiology, University of Mississippi Medical Center, School of Engineering, University of Mississippi. In this position he was research director of digital simulation and visualization projects for Interventional Magnetic Resonance Imaging in which he coordinated projects in both the Engineering School (CS) and the Medical School (Radiology) with the GE Signa SP surgical MR magnet.  He was also director of radiology information systems, where he integrated the Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), supervised the implementation of the Radiology Information System (RIS), evaluated digital dictation systems (including voice recognition), and designed and implemented radiology systems and a LAN-WAN network toward campus-wide filmless radiology.

Honors and Awards: 

Terry Yoo was awarded the Hubert H. Humphrey Award for Service to America by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the June 5, 2014, HHS Departmental Awards Ceremony. Sebelius cited his "leadership in open science through ITK [the Insight Toolkit] as the public software standard for 3-dimensional biomedical image analysis and for all the patients who have benefited." This is one of the highest awards given annually to select individuals within HHS who contribute to the common good and well-being of our nation's citizens through leadership and service.

When NLM sponsored its Visible Human Project (VHP) in the 1990s, it was the most comprehensive study of human anatomy ever attempted. The analysis of its inordinately large data sets far exceeded the software and computing capabilities of the time. In response, Yoo proposed the creation of a public software resource for performing registration (image alignment) and segmentation (image partitioning) of biomedical images. He assembled a consortium of companies and universities that developed ITK. During the past 15 years, ITK has expanded to apply to a wide variety of applications including surgical planning, cancer detection and diagnosis, remote sensing of satellite imagery, segmentation and analysis of cosmological data, 3D microscopy and microanalysis, and even handwriting recognition. The ITK software library comprises nearly 1.5 million lines of C++ code with over 5,000 downloads every month from more than 25 countries.

In addition to his ITK work, Yoo explores advanced topics in image science such as nanometer 3D analysis of microscopy data on the infectious nature of HIV, the use of custom 3D printing in patient-specific surgical instrumentation, and computer vision methods for medication identification to promote consumer safety.
