began meeting the needs of the Indian Health Service.
1954: The first mention of "Therapist" listed as a
distinct category of Commissioned Officers. The three listed officers
are: Esther Anderson, Eleanor G. Loomis, and Elizabeth M. Finke.
July 20, 1954: First patients referred to Physical
Therapy at the NIH.
1959: Physical Therapists at the Gillis W. Long
Hansen's Disease Center in Carville Louisiana began studying the use of
electromyography in Hansen's disease, specifically in ulnar nerve
degeneration-regeneration. The research contributions made in this field
had a significant impact on the physical therapy profession in developing the
use of EMG for evaluation of clients. |
