Abstract:

State-of-the-art healthcare devices are used across h ealthcare settings and produce an enormous amount of patient data. However, despite the advances in technology and the growing adoption of electronic health record systems (EHRs) in both inpatient and outpatient settings,1 most devices do not communicate w ith EHRs in a meaningful way. The problem is twofold: 1) device manufacturers use local, often proprietary codes to represent each measurement, so in order for an EHR to interpret device data, the local codes must be mapped to a language that the EHR under stands; and 2) every manufacturer or device has its own set of local codes, so a separate map is needed for each device. Most healthcare institutions do not have the resources to create these maps, so the data are lost.
